Welcome

What are we all about ?

We are a not for profit community group that aim to make music fun and accessible to everyone.  We play Scottish and Irish traditional music with a few party tunes mixed in.  We do not charge tuition fees to make music accessible to everyone.  We also provide all uniform, equipment and instruments.

Our aim for 2018 is to build a strong junior band.  We are looking for new junior members in the Cheetham Hill, Harpurhey area of Manchester.

What can I learn ?

Music Skills

We not only teach you to play the bagpipes and drums, we also teach you how to read and understand music.  This is an important skill and like riding a bike, something you never forget.

Control and Timing

Learning to play an instrument as part of a band requires a lot of control and timing skills.  The art of 20+ people all playing together and on time is something that we always work on.  It is a skill that can never be perfected, just improved with practice.

Confidence

Confidence is important in a band and as a solo player.  We work with all of our members to help integrate them as part of the band and get every member involved in public performances as soon as they feel comfortable.  We then work to build on the confidence until they are ready to step out in front of an audience and play solo.  This helps with all areas of life’s situations.

Discipline

All members need the discipline to learn scales and tunes away from the main practice sessions.  Learning the tunes is important, because when we are marching in a performance there is nowhere on a bagpipe and drum that you can carry music.  This is worked on every week and helps improve memory skills.  Also discipline is required to make sure that when marching on parade that everyone stays in line and together.  This is something we all work on and aim to improve.

Where and when do we meet ?

We meet at the Irish World Heritage Centre, 1 Irish Town Way, Manchester M8 0AE.

Tuesday – 1900 till 2200 (The junior section finishes at 2030)
